The Life of a Darden First Year

»December 4, 2007: Exams on the horizon.....

It s Tuesday, December 4th and our 2Q exams are only a week away. I came from a non traditional background (insurance) and I was definitely concerned about the academic rigors of getting an MBA, especially at Darden. We ve taken Finance, Econ, Accounting, Decision Anaylsis, etc and I ve managed to survive - primarily because of the benevolent brain trust that I study with everyday. Darden has r... ... (MORE)

»January 23, 2007: The Internship Quest

The first week of second semester was action packed with a new section to meet, new instructors to learn from, and all of the First Year students learning which companies invited them to interview for summer internships and which companies "dinged" them. The Wall Street investment banks seemed to make up the majority of the initial interviews, with consulting firms coming on-grounds ... ... (MORE)

»December 31, 2006: Happy New Year

It s December 31st and we are just 12 hours away from the start of a new and exciting year. As I look back on the past year, I can not help but be satisfied with my decision to come to Darden. In a previous life, I was a pilot in the Air Force, flying in Iraq and Afghanistan. Now, I am a first year student at Darden, having completed the first 2 quarters earlier this month. The experience h... ... (MORE)

»December 12, 2006: The anxiety of exams

I thought I would provide a little perspective on the exam process at Darden. Basically during each quarter, you have five classes. During exam week, each day is an exam in a class. The exams are open notes and you can take them anywhere you wish. During my first quarter, I crammed away for exams as this is what I was used to doing in undergrad. However, a case exam is much different than ... ... (MORE)

»December 8, 2006: Exams

My exams start this coming Monday and today I began preparing for them. My first exam is in Operations, so I spent the majority of my study time working a few of the OPS cases we had this quarter. Operations has been rather interesting this quarter. The material is not difficult to follow and we participated in two operations simulations. In addtion, my professor is very lively and he kee... ... (MORE)

»December 8, 2006: Recruiting

Today is an important day for first year (FY) recruiting because it is resume drop day. Most, if not all FYs will submit coverletters and resumes to apply for summer internships with companies that recruit at Darden. Earlier this week the Career Deveopment Center (CDC) sponsored Coverleter Mania to assist FYs draft their letter. Career counselors from the CDC, as well as second year (SY) ... ... (MORE)

»December 6, 2006: Section A, I'll Miss You

It s about 11:00pm and I not too long ago left a reception hosted by Wyeth Consumer Healtcare. The reception was nice, the food was okay, mostly it was just nice to get away from grounds for a bit.  Tomorrow is a two case day so I will be done with classes by 11:30am. After class, I m planning to have lunch with my second year coach and later tomorrow evening my section is having a happy... ... »November 29, 2006: Almost done with the first semester!

I write this during First Coffee, which is between first and second period. We just had Marketing and now have Operations before finishing the day with GEM (Global Economies and Markets). Generally everything is going well, but we are, of course, staying busy. It s hard to believe that the second quarter is almost done; it really is amazing how quickly the time has gone by. It seems like on... ... (MORE)

»November 1, 2006: Thank you notes

Tonight s meeting with my learning team was not as long as usual, due to the fact that we only have 2 classes to prepare for instead of three. This should give me time to catch up on some of the job stuff that I have been neglecting. We have a session tomorrow about writing cover letters. Here at Darden they take recruting and the career search process very seriously, to the point where we hav... ... (MORE)

»October 30, 2006: Baseball and FIFO

It is 1030 pm and I am just finishing eating dinner. The life of a Darden student. The classes this quarter are much more numbers oriented, which is already taking its toll on myself and most of my classmates. Apparently this is the hardest part of the year and if we can get through this then it is all downhill from here. Tonight I met with my learning team for 3 hours to discuss tomorrows ... ... (MORE)
